Training participants and trainers
The Standing Together for Democracy Consortium through Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) has concluded a two-day training on issues affecting people with disabilities (PWD) and elections. Twenty-nine civil society organizations, disabled people advocacy groups and other representatives from across all 14 districts attended the training in Makeni, Bo and Kenema between 24 – 29 July 2017. The training was primarily aimed at broadening the support network for PWDs inclusion and participation for the 2018 elections in Sierra Leone.
The training covered topics related to the disability models, the legal basis for political rights of PWDs, understanding the electoral process, promoting inclusive electoral and political process, how to engage PWDs and policy advocacy and lobbying. The 2018 Champions Training enhanced knowledge and skills and contributed to increased awareness of the key challenges and concerns raised by PWDs and during the electoral cycle in Sierra Leone.
The training, CSOs said, made them fully informed and aware of the legal basis for political rights of persons with disabilities; and confident to engage policy makers to do more in promoting inclusion in Sierra Leone among other issues.
The Programme Coordinator for WFD, Isha Bangura, said, “Participants were able to generate improved knowledge and skills in the engagement of PWDs for effective programming. This training also contributed to improving the knowledge of participants on the Sierra Leone electoral cycle for CSOs/CBOs/DPOs that contribute to the effective observation and reporting of the 2018 national electoral process,” she added.
